Group Founder

Dr. William Mong Man-wai(1927-2010)established Shun Hing Hong in 1953. He is the Founder of Shun Hing Group, and makes it a point to give back to the society.

Dr. Mong may have gathered many accolades over the years but he doesn't rest on his laurels. In recognition of Dr Mong's significant contribution to charity and community service, the HKSAR Government awarded Dr Mong the Gold Bauhinia Star in 2006. His distinguished contribution earned him the Japanese Order of the Sacred Treasure, Gold Rays with Rossette in 1988 and he has also received Honorary Doctorates from The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, the University of Hong Kong, City University of Hong Kong, the Open University of Hong Kong, the Chinese University of Hong Kong, the University of Sheffield, the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Consultant Professorship and Honorary Doctorate from Tsinghua University, Consultant Professorship from Peking University and Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Honorary Professorship from Zhejiang University, the Gold Cup Award from Comité de France, and a Honorary Fellowship from the University of Cambridge in United Kingdom. In recognition of his remarkable contribution to China's economic, scientific, technological and educational development, the Purple Mountain Observatory of Academia Sinica in China named Asteroid 3678 the Mong Man Wai Star in 1996. Dr Mong also received the Nanjing Honorary Citizen Certificate in 1999.

Dr. Mong served as a member of One Country Two Systems Research Institute and was an appointed member of the Consultative Committee, the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference 7th Sichuan Province Committee and the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference 2ndGuangdong Province Shenzhen Committee. Dr. Mong was a keen supporter of community service organisations and has served as directors of many such groups. He had served as Director of Bank of East Asia since 1995 and previously served as Honorary Chairman of Hong Kong Electrical Appliances Manufacturers Association.

Dr. Mong was the Honorary Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Nanjing University. He was also a Consultant of the Tsinghua University Education Foundation and a Director of the Centre for Advanced Study Foundation of Tsinghua University, the Honorary Trustee of Peking University and an Honorary Member of its Education Fund, and an Honorary Member of the Board of Trustees of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, a Member of the Board of Directors of Jinan University in Guangdong, an Honorary Member of the Court of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and Hong Kong Baptist University as well as a member of La Salle Foundation Limited. In these capacities, Dr. Mong had active contribution towards education, training, academic and research development.

True to the spirit of give and take, Dr. Mong established the Shun Hing Education and Charity Fund in 1984. The Fund has donated more than HK$1.7 billion towards projects in Hong Kong and China that benefit education, healthcare, recreation, sports and environmental protection over the years.

In his free time, Dr. Mong enjoyed fishing, swimming and golfing. As a man of many talents, he also spoke Cantonese, Putonghua, Shanghainese, English and Japanese.
